In this particular customer application, the task was to transport snail shells to various positions within a cycle time defined by the customer. The main challenge was selecting an appropriate end effector, as the snail shells needed to remain undamaged throughout the process.

After careful consideration and analysis of the requirements, the decision was made to use a SoftGripper. This type of gripper is characterized by its flexibility and adaptability, allowing it to conform to the shape of the delicate snail shells. This not only ensures safe transportation but also minimizes the risk of damage.

The choice of the SoftGripper was crucial for the success of the application, as conventional grippers, due to their rigid structure, would not have been able to handle the fragile snail shells without causing damage. By using the SoftGripper, the required cycle time could be met while preserving the integrity of the snail shells.

As part of a customer test in the Customer Testing Area of igus in Cologne, a test setup was realized for a customer. The aim of the test was to evaluate the pick-and-place process for the food industry. Specifically, the aim was to pick and place mushrooms from the conveyor belt. This video presents a customer test setup in which small components are moved on a conveyor belt in a robot cell. At the beginning of the video, we see how the small components are placed on the conveyor belt. They are then transported into the robot cell. A camera strategically placed in the cell recognizes the exact position of the parts on the belt. Once the camera has captured the coordinates of the parts, this information is passed on to a delta robot mounted on top. This robot is equipped with a pneumatic rotary gripper that grips the parts precisely. The delta robot then moves, controlled by the coordinates provided by the camera, and always places the parts in the same orientation. This process demonstrates the precision and efficiency of the robot cell when handling small components. In summary, this video is an excellent representation of the application of modern robot technology in manufacturing and assembly. It shows how efficient and accurate handling of small components can be achieved through the use of cameras, delta robots and pneumatic rotary grippers.

Packaging can be picked up from a feed unit by the Delta robot in combination with a SCHMALZ cobot pump mini. Parts can be moved placed in a picking matrix or moved to a new position/conveyor. The maximum pick rate of this Delta is 30 picks/min.

With a working diameter of 660 mm, the Delta robot is ideal for applications with small parts. With a precision accuracy of 0.5 mm and a maximum speed of 1 m per second, the robot performs its tasks precisely and quickly.

The robot for fast pick and place applications

The igus® Delta robot is available as a 2-axis or 3-axis model, each in two different sizes. Both models include pre-configured drylin linear modules and linear axes (ZLW-1040S, incl. replaceable bearings) with igus stepper motors (NEMA 24 with encoders) as well as all components necessary for self-assembly.

Delta robots are suitable for fast pick and place tasks, conveyor belt picking and stacking tasks in three-dimensional space. In combination with a gripper or suction cup, picking tasks can be implemented very quickly.

A robot cell in which there is a lot of movement quickly attracts many spectators at a trade show. Due to its fast motion sequences, the Delta robot is particularly well suited for demonstrating simple conveyor belt picking tasks, as was the case at our RBTX booth.

The system consists of an igus robot cell in which a 3-axis delta robot has been mounted. The robot is available with a working space of 360 mm or 660 mm. In addition, various grippers, camera systems or accessories, such as energy chain systems, can be mounted. In this example, a cobot pump from Schmalz was mounted for vacuum generation.
